
Bridges, Ramps & Retaining Walls
Brown & Beattie Ltd. has completed assessments and designed repairs to bridges, ramps and retaining walls. Bridge experience primarily consists of pedestrian bridges however we have been retained to assess the damage to highway bridges which have been struck by vehicles. Ramp experience includes both vehicular ramps for parking garages and pedestrian ramps related to barrier-free building access. Garage ramp design has included concrete repairs, waterproofing and both electric and glycol snow melting systems. In most cases garage ramps can be repaired while maintaining access to the parking garage. Retaining wall expertise includes concrete, timber and precast concrete segmental walls.

The failed garage entry ramp snow melting system at this Richmond Hill condominium complex was replaced in conjunction with a new concrete ramp topping and waterproofing of the underlying structural ramp slab. This ramp utilized glycol heating pipes for the snow melting system and included new snow and temperature sensors. Brown & Beattie provided engineering services related to specifications, tendering, construction review and contract administration.

The repair of the garage access ramp at this high-rise condominium located in the heart of downtown Toronto required special access solutions. The garage ramp was specified to be completed in two phases with temporary traffic lights installed to facilitate access while work was in progress. Continued monitoring and coordinating with the Property Manager, Building Staff and Contractor allowed for minimal disruption to the residents during the work.

This tiered retaining wall project at a Thornhill townhome condominium complex included the replacement of an original timber retaining wall which had rotted with a more durable concrete segmental retaining wall. Brown & Beattie Ltd. prepared the specifications which included improved drainage and completed the tendering along with providing general field review services and contract administration.
